ATARI AR

Murakami designs original games for the Atari 2600 console and transforms them into paintings. Each canvas functions as an AR marker. Pointed at with a smartphone, the game appears on the painting's surface and demands to be played.

The question of why digital subject matter requires a physical canvas led Murakami to reconsider the support itself. His answer is functional: the painting exists because without it, the augmented reality cannot. The canvas is no longer a surface for depiction alone. It is a portal through which the game enters physical space.
